Most floor tiles are 8 inches by 8 inches but larger versions are available.

But one of its best qualities is how close together you can put the tile.
There are some guidelines that need to be followed but the actual size is more of a personal choice than it is a set width.
And tile as large as 48 is becoming common.
Due to the amount of size variation in the tile the actual grout joint width may need to vary from what is requested or specified.

However large tile can be challenging to install.
More importantly smaller tiles are difficult to clean.
More seams mean more grout and that presents you with that much more grout.
In general there is more size variation in larger sized handmade tiles so they need a bigger grout joint for that to become less noticeable and for a more even installation.

The actual grout joint size should be equal to three times the variance in actual tile facial dimensions.
