Levers handles slide onto a rod assembly with a set screw.
This screw fits in a groove on the round lever rod.
How you fix the problem depends on the design of your doorknob or lever and how it is fastened to the spindle and the door.
Repeat this process for the other side of the door as well.
Use your screwdriver and take off the handles from the door.
Sometimes the doorknob or lever loosens so it spins on its spindle while other times the lockset s mounting ring and faceplate become loose and pull away from the surface of the door.
Keep the handle in place and replace the set screw on the bottom of the lever.
Step 4 repeat on opposite side.
Of course if it s on an exterior door you ll want to do this when the weather is nice and when it s safe to leave the door unlocked.
